Summary: If you are a regular reader of this blog, you may have noticed I missed a week last week, I think for the first time since I started! Unfortunately I was struck down with the dreaded swine flu caught on the plane on the way back from Shanghai. But, of course, the Chinese have not got swine flu in their nation, they say. Yeah right!

Summary: I am writing this week a few days after coming back from Hong Kong and China with a UKTI trade mission. To be privileged enough to visit the hot-bed of the world’s economy was an inspiring (and in some ways challenging) experience. With the massive growth in the Chinese economy has come both a plethora of designer shops around each corner and also a new interest in western food, which funnily enough was the reason I was there – to see some prospective new customers in both Hong Kong and China that are looking for a gourmet food supplier.

Summary: Do we save money by driving to the so called cheapest supermarket shopping choice? Not always it would seem. That’s why deli wholesaler Cotswold Fayre is exposing the myth that supermarkets are cheaper. Consider Asda’s recent announcement that a list of selected items would all be sold at a fixed price of one pound each. Then it turns out that almost one in five of the items were selling below one pound before the offer. But that didn’t make any difference… the punters flocked in their usual thousands to take advantage of this “great offer” and at the same time spend much more on all the other temptations put in their way.

Summary: I had the pleasure of visiting Ireland last week, both to visit existing gourmet food customers and see some potential new ones. Whilst there I was very interested to draw comparisons between the UK and Irish market. First of all I was shocked at the depth of the recession over there. After many boom years, largely due to European Investment, known as the Celtic Tiger, Ireland has got a recession far deeper than ours.

Summary: At the beginning of this year a farm shop in Norfolk made the news for waging a price war against their local Tesco and advertising the fact that their fruit and veg was considerably cheaper than their supermarket rival. I hope that several of us have learnt lessons this year on the way we price our goods.

Summary: I am writing this week about two small words that seem to be disappearing out of the business world. “Thank you”. Many suppliers and retailers take their customers for granted. Looking for opportunities to thank your customers will reap large rewards in the future for very little effort. Those two words breed amazing loyalty and help build business relationships, yet how little they seem to be used today.

Summary: You may have read this week about the jailing of the director of an organic food company for fraudulent trading. The so-called “Organic, Natural and Ethical” company called Onefood, was also known as Swaddles Organic. Neil Stansfield bought non-organic pork pies and salmon from sources including Tesco and Waitrose, removed the packaging and re-packaged the products as organic and premium, selling them to retailers including Fortnum & Mason, making considerable margin in the process. In total, over a few years, this unscrupulous trader had netted over £500,000 in profits.
